Ida W. Byther-Smith
Ida W. Byther-Smith was born in Terry Mississippi, is the oldest of ten children, and is the mother of four children. At age 41, she tested positive for HIV, and her life completely changed. After almost dying she now says "I thank God" for HIV. I did not learn to live until I almost died."
She has done numerous TV interviews and has also written or appeared in articles in Ebony Magazine, POZ Magazine, The Tribune, Sun Times, and Chicago Defender. She speaks as an advocate for those living with HIV with the compassion that only comes through personal experience.
At least once a week, she is somewhere trying to help people to understand that "even though it may not be your fault you are positive, it is your responsibility to get tested and know." She works especially with church groups and people over 50 to get the message of valuing yourself and walking in courage for those who often feel misused and ashamed.
One of her major goals is to disseminate information to women about the HIV/AIDS epidemic since women face special risks and are dying faster because of their lack of knowledge.
Ms. Byther-Smith is a member of New Life Covenant Church (Oakwood), she gives group educational presentations on prevention and care of HIV/AIDS. She is a living testimony of what God can do. Ms. Byther-Smith is a graduate of Malcolm X College receiving an AAS in 1985. She went on to Governor State University where she received her BA in 1988. She is currently working on a Master’s Degree in Theology.
