A woman's story : overcoming the shame of HIVA woman's story : overcoming the shame of HIV

Ida W. Byther-Smith, Annette Y. Fields, Angel D. Jones
The book that could save your life!

While all three of the women you will meet in these pages are HIV Positive and AIDS Activists, this is not a book about living with or dying from AIDS. This is a book about living. This is a book about overcoming the shame of telling your story and stepping out into the Son’s light. AIDS is growing at a disproportionate rate among black women, yet we still hear of women who are having sex outside of marriage and will not ask their partners to use condoms. Why? As a people, our community still talks about AIDS in hushed tones, whispered as someone who has it passes by.Many who are HIV Positive would rather tell others they have cancer than admit their status. Why?

Have those who Jesus told to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils, freely, placed limits on compassion that stop at AIDS? No, the compassion stopped before AIDS. It stopped when we told our children, just don’t go around Uncle Larry anymore. It stopped when we ignored the black and blue marks on our sisters faces. Compassion stopped when we refused to look into the eyes of the hurting, regardless of the cause.

In responding to our pain in this way, we have invited the spirit of shame to fill the place where love ought to be. Don’t be fooled; shame is not just to keep you from telling your story. Shame comes to convince you that God, Himself, cares nothing for you because of your condition. Whether you have been involved in an abusive relationship, are a survivor of rape or incest, or living with HIV/AIDS, our prayer is that you will know that God loves you where you are, and He wants you.

If, on the other hand, the subject of AIDS conjures up images of sinful people who deserve to go to hell, our prayer for you is that God reveals His heart to you concerning those living with AIDS.   We know it is God’s desire that we become conformed to the image of His Son. Look at how Jesus announced his ministry:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. Luke 4:18

Our prayer for you is that you will become God’s listening ears to those who are hurting, and His hands of compassion to those in need. We pray that these women will put a face on AIDS that you don’t forget these are our mothers, our sisters, our daughters and our friends.

I warn you now, the language used in some of the stories includes words you don’t normally see in a Christian publication. Our aim is not to offend, but to allow the women to tell their stories in their words. We apologize in advance for those who might be offended. We stand by our decision to present Annette, Angel and Ida as they are loved by God, yet imperfect.

It is time for the shame to stop.
